Baxter Infusion Pump Recall

What is the Baxter Infusion Pump?

Infusion pumps are devices that deliver fluids, including nutrients and medications, into a patient’s body in a controlled manner. Widely used in hospitals and other clinical settings (by patients in comas, to deliver blood-thinning drugs to heart patients and chemotherapy to cancer patients) and in the home because they allow a greater level of accuracy in fluid delivery, there are, according to Baxter International, just under 200,000 of these pumps in use at hospitals and other medical facilities.

The FDA has published a recall of Baxter Colleague Infusion Pumps

What are the dangers behind this recall of Baxter Infusion Pumps?

Between 2005 to 2009, the pumps have been linked to more than 56,000 complaints of injuries, deaths and malfunction. The pumps are distributed by the Baxter Healthcare Corporation, a US subsidiary of Baxter International. Since 1999, pumps have been the subject of several Class I recalls for battery swelling, inadvertent power off, service data errors, and other issues. Issues with the pumps include software defects, user interface problems and mechanical and electrical failures.

People with hemophilia, immune disorders, infectious diseases, kidney disease, trauma, and other chronic and acute medical conditions rely on this device for accurate distribution of medication. This recall is partially in response to Baxter's proposed correction schedule, delaying corrections until May 2012. Baxter now has to recall and destroy all Colleague infusion pumps, reimburse customers for the value of the recalled device, and assist in finding customers a replacement.
