California Chantix® Lawyers

What is Chantix®?

Chantix® is the Pfizer trade name for Varenicline. Varenicline tartrate is a prescription nicotinic receptor/partial agonist used to treat the addiction to smoking. reduces cravings for and decreases the pleasurable effects of cigarettes.

What are the dangers of Chantix®?

The most serious result from taking Chantix® is suicide, and thoughts of suicide. "Some patients have had changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, and suicidal thoughts or actions while using CHANTIX to help them quit smoking. Some people had these symptoms when they began taking CHANTIX, and others developed them after several weeks of treatment or after stopping CHANTIX. If either you, your family or caregiver notice agitation, depressed mood, or changes in behavior that are not typical for you, or if you develop suicidal thoughts or actions, stop taking CHANTIX and call your doctor right away." Side effects include nausea, headache, difficulty sleeping, and abnormal dreams, change in taste, vomiting, abdominal pain, flatulence, and constipation.

In May 2008, Pfizer updated the safety information associated with Chantix, noting that "some patients have reported changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions."

Side Effects Listed on Labeling
Participants in clinical trials reported side effects, including:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Gas
  • Insomnia
  • Vivid, abnormal dreams
  • Changes in the way food tastes
Most side effects may lessen as your body adjusts to the medication and the withdrawal of nicotine. Taking Chantix after eating and with a full glass of water may reduce the risk of nausea.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory in 2008 that health care professionals, those taking Chantix, and the families of those taking Chantix should be alert to and monitor for changes in mood and behavior in people taking Chantix. Signs and symptoms may include anxiety, nervousness, tension, depressed mood, unusual behaviors, and thinking about or attempting suicide. To date, no evidence of a direct connection between taking varenicline and these symptoms has been shown. However, if you're taking the medication, you and your family need to remain alert for these signs and symptoms. People taking Chantix should report changes in mood and behavior to their doctor immediately.

The FDA also advises that people taking Chantix may experience impaired ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. Because of this the Federal Aviation Administration has added Chantix to its list of prohibited drugs for pilots and air-traffic controllers.

Don't take Chantix if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, or if you're breast-feeding. Chantix hasn't been studied in these situations, so it isn't clear if it's safe for these women.

People with kidney problems and those on dialysis may need to have a lower dose of Chantix, so discuss this with your doctor.

Quitting smoking may alter the effects of certain medications and supplements on your body. Tell your doctor about all the medications and supplements you're taking, especially if you're taking asthma medicines or blood thinners.

FDA Issues Public Health Advisory on Chantix
Agency requests that manufacturer add new safety warnings for smoking cessation drug The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today issued a Public Health Advisory to alert health care providers, patients, and caregivers to new safety warnings concerning Chantix (varenicline), a prescription medication used to help patients stop smoking.

On Nov. 20, 2007, FDA issued an Early Communication to the public and health care providers that the agency was evaluating postmarketing adverse event reports on Chantix related to changes in behavior, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and actual suicidal behavior. As the agency’s review of the adverse event reports proceeds, it appears increasingly likely that there may be an association between Chantix and serious neuropsychiatric symptoms. As a result, FDA has requested that Pfizer, the manufacturer of Chantix, elevate the prominence of this safety information to the warnings and precautions section of the Chantix prescribing information, or labeling. In addition, FDA is working with Pfizer to finalize a Medication Guide for patients. This is an example of FDA working with drug manufacturers throughout products’ lifecycles to keep health care professionals and patients informed of new and emerging safety data. Read More

F.A.A. Bans Chantix
May 23 — Less than 48 hours after FAA learned the anti-smoking medicine Chantix might lead to safety problems, it ordered pilots and air traffic controllers to stop taking it immediately.

The agency took this swift action after a medical safety group, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, released the results of a study this week that found evidence for the occurrence of seizures, loss of consciousness, heart attacks, vision problems, and various psychiatric instabilities in individuals who use Chantix. LA TIMES-2008-05-25 Drug linked to traffic mishapsThe nonprofit Institute for Safe Medication Practices last week linked Chantix to more than two dozen highway accidents reported to the Food and Drug Administration, saying the mishaps may have resulted from such drug side effects as seizures. Pfizer, the drug's manufacturer, said that as early as May of last year, it had added a warning to the prescribing literature for Chantix that patients should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
