DePuy Orthopaedics has issued the following announcement:

DePuy Orthopaedics is issuing a voluntary recall of its ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. This recall means additional testing and monitoring may be necessary. These systems first became available in July 2003.

• One in eight who had received the ASR total hip replacement required revision surgery.
• The FDA adverse event reporting system has hundreds of reports on the ASR hip replacement device.
• Metallosis, toxical synovialitis, and elevated metal ions have been observed in patients.
• The Depuy ASR metal on metal devices tend to fail at a high rate.
• Adverse reactions to metal debris have been experienced by some patients.

As a result of component loosening, component malalignment, infection, fracture of the bone, dislocation, metal sensitivity, symptoms may include pain, swelling, and problems walking.

In a study of deceased hip replacement patients, the joint capsule tissue showed evidence of metallosis in all hips. In another study, a woman developed "metal neuropathy. She had metallosis after hip arthroplasty with a cobalt-chromium alloy prosthesis. She developed progressive sensory disturbance, hearing loss, and hypothyroidism. Sural nerve biopsy indicated axonopathy. After exchange arthroplasty, blood levels of cobalt and chromium decreased, and her symptoms improved. Cobalt or chromium can cause axonopathy."
