Ephedra is the herbal form of ephedrine, an amphetamine-like stimulant. Some products that contain ephedra are Metabolife 356, Metabolife, and Ultimate Orange. Linked to strokes, heart conditions, kidney, and other serious diseases, it is estimated that from four to fifteen million Americans take ephedra products. Ephedra makers claim that no serious health problems result if the product is taken as directed. However, ephedra-containing supplements may have very different doses than described on the bottles in which those supplements arrive. This increases the possibility of taking more of the dose than advised.
