GULFPORT, Miss --May 03, 2010 The question may be when and not if the Gulf oil spill could get into the Loop Current. Scientists speculate that within one day of getting into loop current, the spill will spread oil south along the Florida coast and into the Florida Keys, within seven days affecting Florida's beaches, coral reefs, fisheries and ecosystem. The spill will affect local fisheries that rely on abundant supplies of shrimp, crabs, and oysters. The Gulf region is responsible for a fifth of total U.S. commercial seafood production and almost three quarters of the country's shrimp production. Three corporate "fat cats" are on the hot seat: Tony Hayward, 52, Carl-Henric Svanberg, 57, and Lamar McKay, 51

If it takes the expected three months to stop the Deepwater Horizon spill, recovery payments are likely to start at $2 billion and could reach more than $8 billion. Although BP insists it isn't to blame, it will pay to clean it up. Daily, 200,000 gallons have beens spilling into the Gulf. President Obama visited Louisiana on Sunday and made it clear that the federal government would help, but was not to blame. However, Obama has said that BP is responsible and that BP will be paying the bill.

Venice, LA. --April 21, 2010 - An offshore drilling platform operated by Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico was the scene of a huge blast. 126 workers were evacuated from the oil rig, but up to a dozen are still missing. Seven of those where were rescued had been critically injured. The University of South Alabama Medical Center and West Jefferson Hospital in New Orleans are treating some of those involved.
