Propulsid (cisapride) is a prescription drug used to treat nighttime heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). On March 23, 2000, the makers of Propulsid, Janssen Pharmaceutica (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) announced its intention to discontinue the promotion of the drug in the United States. Since 1993, Propulsid has been shown to cause serious cardiovascular reactions, and in some cases, death. At the time of market removal, the FDA had received reports of at least 341 persons experiencing heart rhythm abnormalities and 80 deaths associated with Propulsid use. Such reported instances are likely to be but a fraction of the overall adverse events associated with the drug, nationwide. Moreover, the approval of Propulsid by the FDA had been only for adult use. A study of approximately 58,000 premature babies showed that about 20% had been given Propulsid. Presently approximately 11 infant deaths have been associated with Propulsid use.
