California Serzone Injury LawyersSerzone, also known as Nefazodone, is a highly popular and widely prescribed anti-depressant drug. It is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. More than 7 million prescriptions have been written for Serzone and annual sales exceed $400 million. On January 8th, 2003, Serzone was removed from the market in all Europeancountries because it has been linked to 26 deaths from liver damage. This follows a black box warning issued by the FDA in 2001. On December 7, 2001, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised the manufacturer that warning labels should advise users that Serzone could cause liver damage. The drug has been linked to numerous cases of life-threatening hepatic failure. On January 9, 2002, Bristol-Myers Squibb, issued a manufacturer's "Important Drug Warning Including Black Box Information." The Important Drug Warning advises healthcare practitioners that "cases of life-threatening hepatic failure have been reported in patients treated with SERZONE" and that numerous persons have or will suffer liver failure, death or transplantation. The Warning also indicates that the current estimate of the rate of liver failure associated with Serzone use is "about 3-4 times the estimated background rate of liver failure." A new Warning is being added to the Serzone prescribing information, advising that "patients should be advised to be alert for signs and symptoms of liver dysfunction (jaundice, anorexia, gastrointestinal complaints, malaise, etc.) and to report them to their doctor immediately if they occur."
